Pollination Station: A Youth Designed Garden

Summer Green Valley Project members, aged 13-20, have embarked on an exciting journey to develop a pollinator garden design for a small park located in Ojai at the corner of Signal Ave and E Summer Street. The garden, aptly named "Pollination Station," aims to create a vibrant and sustainable habitat for local pollinators while enhancing the beauty of the park.

A Thoughtful Approach to Design

In their design, the team has thoughtfully incorporated several native pollinator-friendly plants, leveraging the existing coast live oak trees in the space. The diverse plant palette includes:

Using the Calscape database, the members meticulously researched each plant's dimensions, sun and water needs, and companion plants. They also considered which species of pollinators each plant would support, ensuring a well-rounded and effective selection for their garden.

From Vision to Reality

The group began by mapping their ideas on a physical whiteboard, allowing for a hands-on and collaborative planning process. Once they were satisfied with their design, they transitioned to creating a virtual map and a photo-realistic rendering. This digital representation showcases how the garden will look in 5-10 years when the plants are fully grown, offering a glimpse into the future of this thriving pollinator haven.

A Collaborative Effort

This project is a testament to the creativity, dedication, and environmental stewardship of the Green Valley Project members. By integrating native plants and considering the needs of local pollinators, they have designed a space that will benefit both the community and the ecosystem.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Pollination Station comes to life and becomes a beacon of sustainability and natural beauty in our neighborhood!
