A Symbol of Strength

We hear about oak trees a lot in Ojai. They are protected from excessive pruning and earthworks, but do we understand WHY they are so crucial to this landscape?

In their blog post “Why Oak Trees,” @ojaivalleylandconservancy describes how oaks help Ojai buffer against extreme temperature and precipitation fluctuations, making the valley more resilient to climate shifts. “The oaks planted today start off small and fragile,” OVLC writes, “but with time they will become majestic towering oaks that define Ojai’s landscapes''—and maintain ecosystem equilibrium.

With oaks around, the moisture-holding capacity of the land is enhanced—significantly. Not only do the oaks lower the ambient temperature with their large shady canopy, they condense moisture out of the air. In a dry La Nina year, like 2021 which had a quarter of the usual rainfall, oaks will rely more heavily on tap roots reaching stored groundwater, which is why it is crucial that we are mindful of not overdrafting from the groundwater in Ojai basin aquifers.

The tree is a symbol of strength, morale, resistance and knowledge. I absolutely love oak trees because they provide a sense of comfort and homeliness. I consider myself lucky to live in a town where I’m surrounded by many different kinds of plants and trees.
