General information:

Coulter’s Matilija poppies are the largest and “showiest” poppies. This plant can be quite difficult to establish, as it is extremely sensitive to water intake. However, once it is established, it spreads rather quickly. Thus making the poppies outgrow their intended areas quickly. 

Appearance:

Matilija poppies are easy to identify due to their large, white crinkled petals. The poppies resemble a fried egg, as the petals are white and the stamen is a bright yellow color. The flowers can grow quite large, as they can reach 7 inches across!

Plant growth, season, and dormancy: They can grow 7 -10 feet tall, and 20 feet wide. It is a summer deciduous plant, and its flowering seasons are Spring and Summer. 

Landscaping information:

Matilija poppies are a full sun plant, and require little to very little water. However, this can be tricky as Matilija poppies are extremely sensitive to water intake, so it is important to closely monitor the plant’s water intake. It does not need summer irrigation once it is established. It requires medium to fast draining soil, and prefers sandy soil. It requires a p.H. level of 5.0-8.0.
