Foothill Penstemon Penstemon heterophyllus

General information:

Foothill penstemon are an endemic species of penstemon to California in coastal areas and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It can be found in grassland habitats, as well as forests. It is often utilized in water-wise gardens, as it requires very little water to thrive. 

Appearance:

It has leaves that can extend up to 4 inches wide, and its base is woody. It has flowers that range from blue, purple and even magenta! 

Plant growth, season, and dormancy:

Foothill penstemons are a perennial herb plant, and can grow 3-5 ft tall and 5 ft wide. They grow at a rapid rate, and remain evergreen year round. Its flowering seasons are Winter, Spring, and Summer. 

Landscaping information:

It is a full sun plant, but can tolerate partial shade. It requires very little water, and requires 3 times a month summer irrigation once it's established. It is easy to care for, and can tolerate all rates of soil drainage. It can also tolerate various types of soil as long as it is well draining. Lastly, it requires a soil p.H. of 6.0-7.5.

How to use: 

It is often used for deer resistant cover, groundcover, and as a lawn replacement.
