Coyote Mint

Coyote Mint Monardella villosa

General Information:

Coyote mint is a type of subshrub that is identified by its fragrant, but pleasant smell, as well as its characteristic lavender flowers. Coyote mint grows well inland, and requires light pruning to maintain a “neat” appearance. In traditional medicine, it is often used to help with upset stomachs and other stomach ailments.

Appearance:

Coyote mint is a perennial type herb, and can grow up to 2 ft tall and 3 ft wide. Lastly, it is known for its beautiful pink to lavender colored flowers. 

Plant growth, season, and dormancy:

It grows at a moderate pace, and its flowering season is summer. It is both an evergreen and summer semi-deciduous plant.

Landscaping information:

Coyote mint is a full sun plant, but can tolerate partial shade. It requires very little water, and prefers low moisture soil. It must be watered twice a month once established, and requires medium draining soil. It is relatively easy to care for, as it requires very little water. It tolerates various kinds of soil, but requires a soil p.H. level of 5.0-7.0.

It is commonly used as deer resistant cover, hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, and bee gardens.
