California Bush Sunflower

California bush sunflower (Encelia californica):

General information:

California bush sunflower grows rapidly, therefore making it desirable for new pollinator gardens! In addition to its rapid growth, it is easy to care for, therefore making it ideal for beginner gardeners. Its flowers typically bloom during winter and spring, which attract various pollinators (i.e. birds, bees, and butterflies). The flowers release seeds which provide food for small birds like goldfinches. Although it grows aggressively, it does provide great groundcover. 

Appearance: 

Its flowers range from brown, purple, and yellow. Its leaves appear waxy, and are medium length. The flowers resemble daisies! 

Plant growth, season, and dormancy: 

Bush sunflower is a shrub-type of plant, and grows as tall as 1.6-5 feet tall and 3-7 feet wide. It has a rapid growth rate, and is a summer semi-deciduous plant. Its flowering seasons are winter and spring.

Landscaping information:

California bush sunflower requires both partial shade and full sunlight. It is a low moisture plant, and requires a weekly water regimen. It is extremely easy to care for, and requires little to no maintenance. It tolerates various soil types, and requires a p.H. level of 6-8. Lastly, it can tolerate temperatures as cold as 30ºF.

How to use:

This plant is often utilized for bank stabilization, butterfly gardens, bee gardens, and groundcovers.
