Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes are scary creatures for some, but they play an important role in our ecosystem. They control the small mammal population. Snakes are both the predator and prey, so they keep the pest population down by feeding in mice and other small rodents that damage crops and carry diseases. If you encounter a snake by any chance, give it the right-of-way and do not attempt to harm it. I personally have had a fear a snakes for as long as I can remember. I’ve always feared getting bitten by them, but over the years I’ve learned that not all snakes are venomous and they won’t bite unless they’re provoked.

Last year we planted oak circles with the C.R.E.W, OVLC, Once Upon a Watershed, Pax Environmental, and Watershed progressive. These up and coming oak trees are already providing shelter for small animals such as snakes. Planting these trees and seeing how it’s already impacting our environment in a positive manner feels very accomplishing. I hope to continue to create a positive impact in our valley.
